Most Galleries and Museums are free in London, but sometimes donations are expected. You may have to pay for some temporary exhibitions, but these are optional. Here I have selected the Museums and Galleries that we visit during the summer months and at other times during the year.
THE BRITISH MUSEUM Visit this world famous museum founded in 1753. It houses almost every aspect of international cultural history. Treasures include the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone, a major collection of Egyptian mummies and the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, designed by Norman Foster. VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM One of the world’s greatest collections of fine and applied arts. Enjoy the impressive Cast Courts, the Raphael Gallery, the new British Galleries and a collection of over 400 years of fashion. MUSEUM OF LONDON A fascinating museum charting the growth of London from pre-historic times to today. THE SCIENCE MUSEUM This world famous museum covers the history and development of science and technology. With lots of hands-on interactive displays. THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM This cathedral-like building opened in 1881 and houses some of the finest natural history collections in the world. TATE MODERN The former Bankside Power Station has been converted into a spectacularly spacious gallery. It includes works by over 200 modern artists. TATE BRITAIN Traditional and contemporary galleries house national collections of British painting from all periods, including the Turner collection. THE NATIONAL GALLERY The world’s finest collection of Western European paintings. With over 2,000 works of art including Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez, and the Impressionists. NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY British history told through portraits. Plus join a free informal tour of the Tudor and Stuart Galleries. |
